About Hornby Volleyball

The Hornby Volleyball Club was established in 1987. Currently the Hornby Volleyball club has a total of over 100 members, with 7 teams entered in the local Canterbury Volleyball Association Inc. competition on a Monday night.

The winter volleyball season starts with training and trials at the beginning of March and competition starts mid April and concludes with Nationals in August/September. Our teams are involved in the weekly Monday competition at Pioneer Stadium and our A teams also play in the Southern League competition throughout the South Island which is required to win a place in Division one at Nationals.

Our A league squads are our elite teams. We do our best to provide good coaching and management and to help fund them to attend tournaments and Nationals.

Our Colts squads are our development teams - they comprise of predominately High School pupils and are the teams we hope to obtain our future A league players from. We try to support these teams by keeping fees to the minimum and providing as much support as they request.

Our Women's B teams we hope will be competitive teams along side our A Team, not only able to  compete against Division 1 teams in local competition but also in the Southern League.  Our eventual aim is to get more than one team qualifying in Division 1 Nationals.

The Classics Team are traditionally a group of older or experienced players that wish to play competitive volleyball in the CVA competition rather than just social Thursday night games.  Many of the Classics Team have traditionally helped make up the bulk of our club administration and are therefore very important to the functioning of the club.

Besides organising our teams for the winter competition, the club is also responsible for running the social Beach Volleyball competition held at Sumner. This comprises of two eight week competitions pre and post Christmas playing on either Tuesday or Wednesday nights. In the 2006/2007 competition we had approximately 90 teams playing on the beach both before and after Christmas. Check out our Beach page for more info.

In addition to this the club also runs the Thursday night winter Business House competition on behalf of CVA. This is played at Pioneer Stadium, comprising of approximately 36 teams, and requires the club to organise the draws and manage the competition on the night.

The Spike - March 2008...

PRESIDENT'S WELCOME:

Another year of Club Volleyball has arrived and we now enter the sorting out stage of creating teams for both the Monday CVA Competition and also the Southern Zone Competition. Welcome to all new members and welcome back to all present members of the club.

To get the year off to a good start we need all players to make their intentions clear as to what their commitments are for the year so that we can pick team members who will be reliable throughout the season. All players from previous seasons need to make themselves financial if last year's fees are outstanding before they begin playing this year. We always aim to make our fees as cheap as possible and hence we expect that all fees will be paid by the advertised dates.
