Women's A Report:

This team had a very good year in terms of getting to practice and to Monday games. Unbeaten in the local competition until the last game.

The Southern League attendance was not as well attended however and the results reflected this. The best result was a second on count back and all others were forth or fifth. The net result of this was forth overall in the Southern League putting us in the section for nationals with NZIS WELL and CHCH, Trojans, Marlborough and Avondale. The team played a terrible mistake-ridden first game against NZIS Well losing 1-3 in what should have been a win but the first game blues were in control. All was not lost if we could have beaten NZIS Chch in the next game. After a poor start the team began to play well winning the second set and then the third set by 25 - 12. We were leading by 22 - 19 in the forth and looking to take it out. With a big crowd gathered the girls lost their way however and succumbed 29 - 27 and then were well beaten in the fifth.

After 4 games and only one win, losing in a close match 1-3 to Avondale, the team was destined to finish down the table. To the girls credit however they began to play well and won their next 3 games against very good opposition. The best was the beating of Trojans 3-2 Who had beaten NZIS Chch 3-0 and were a very tough team. A shame we couldn't have played that way earlier. Next was Unifatahs, the old 99er's, who had won nationals before, we won 3-0 and finally Vikings who had been too good for us previously. After throwing away a good lead in the forth we played superbly in the fifth to win 3-2. Final placing of ninth in Division One.

Although disappointing the team did learn a heap from this tournament and we certainly played some outstanding volleyball that is up to the standard required to win nationals. If the girls stick at it they have the ability to beat all teams. Watch out for 2005.

A big thank you to Sue Small, Sally's mum, who did a fantastic job in managing the team as well as for her enlightened advice for the girls Social interests.

We all deserved a medal for putting up with the trip home after the breakdown and then the delays at the airport.

Women's B Classics Report:

Well it's the end of my first season and they tell me I have to write a report on the team so here goes. It started off with Rails coming to me and asking to help coach her team as they were in need of help (I don't know if I did help) so I went down to a couple of games then we started training. The first training was a bit of a learning experience for all of us, it was a back to basics training then we moved on from that to some more game play drills. We worked on court work a lot as the players would get lost on court. I was very impressed with the set up within the team, from getting duty sorted out to making sure the kid's were looked after at training. Even if this meant the kids were down at training being used as ball chasers or targets. The Monday night games, well to be honest they could have been a lot better. The way we played sometimes we would have beaten any of the teams in our grade, if only we could keep the concentration up for long enough (more than five points). After a lot of close games we finally got the first win. Other than that this team has an awesome social side, if it's not after training drinks, it's team drinks after games then there is the Fourth of July party which was very cool (even if I don't remember it all). I'm looking forward to the master’s games. All in all the team improved and I learnt a lot about these Classic's ladies.

I would like to thank the Hornby Classic Volleyball team for such a great season. We all had a wonderful time and had a lot of close games and we look forward to next season. I would like to thank Alan our coach for helping us and for his support.

Men's A Report

The Men's A team for 2004 started the season with a promising turnout and players were keen to make an effort to qualify for Nationals. The few of us left over from last year were glad to see many new players with promising abilities to lend to the team. Unfortunately as the season went on many players left for various reasons and we struggled to maintain a team ethic for trainings and games leaving many of the team frustrated. Mike tried hard to motivate us and the club supported us but individually we didn't get it together enough to compete as well as we were able to. Some enjoyable tournaments and games nonetheless especially the first Dunedin one. Many thanks to Mike for his efforts and Raylene for her persistence regardless of the end result.

- Andy

P.S. Congratulations to the boys who on Finals Night put up a great fight for one of the best games of the season to beat Phoenix convincingly!!! An excellent end to the season. I hope to see you next year for a committed and constructive season.

SWISS Report

This year we welcomed two new members - Pepe and Tusiaisi into the team. A steady squad of ten through out the 2004 volleyball season.

SWISS have had a productive and successful year wining Div 2 of CVA and Queen’s Birthday Competition; bit of a shaky start but it came around. Our thanks to Allan Asomua & Nisani for their assistance over the season, their coaching efforts are invaluable. The team developed in learning new skills as well as developing the old. The openness of team meetings and time outs enable the team to identify clear goals for each game giving us a successful season. Although we did not do as well as we had hoped at the National tournament it was an exciting and valuable experience – one we were happy to have participated in. We felt we met our specific team goals during games around communication, court coverage and control (which consisted of a range of things) were met on many occasions. Our tribute and thanks to the Hornby Volleyball Club committee, especially to Sheri and Raylene, for their commitment and support to the team; we have enjoyed the partnership and appreciated all that you have done for us. We are looking forward in continuity of a great partnership in the future.

Finally, our thanks to the team for their efforts this year, it has been a learning experience for us all. Look forward to another season next year!

- Lupe

Hornby Colts Men's and Women's Report

These two teams joined the club for the first time the year. The women’s team was coached by Justin Lambert and the men’s by Ollie Matese.

Both teams comprised of local High School players wishing to continue their volleyball through the winter and played in the B league competition. It was a very successful first season for both teams with the men placing First and the women fourth. These are both excellent results and we look forward to these teams joining us again next year.

Congratulations to all these young players on an excellent result.

- Sheri

President's Report

Welcome to my first report as club President. So far my term as President has been interesting and challenging. This year we have had seven teams playing under the Hornby Volleyball Club umbrella, not all of these teams have been full members of the club. The club teams were the Women’s A, Classics and the Men’s A&B teams. It was with pleasure that we also had a men’s and women’s Hornby Colts team join us from Hornby Junior Sports Club and great to have SWISS join us again this year. It was fantastic to see so many of these teams do well in the Monday night competition.

We have been holding monthly committee meetings and have had great attendance with eight to ten people most nights. At our next meeting on 21th September we will be reviewing the past season and discussing how we could do things differently next year. All club members are welcome to attend, we do listen to everyone’s feedback and try to take it into account when making decisions.

One of the tasks we have been attempting as a committee is rewriting the Club constitution. Hopefully this will be ratified on the 17th of September. This has become important because we need it to continue to obtain funds from the gaming charities. We have been very successful at obtaining funds this year and hope that can continue.

We are going to continue with a number of administration tasks including writing a Hornby Volleyball Club Policy and Management Manual. This is basically a pulling together of all the things we already do into one place and putting it onto our website so everyone can access it when they need to. We are trying to ensure that some of the inequitable things that happened this year do not happen again and at the same time document some of the tasks that we do every year so we can build on previous experience and try to improve every year.

Keeping in mind that without good coaches and players we don’t have a volleyball club I would love to hear from any of the players with ideas of how we could do things differently to improve our club for its members. Please ring or email me at any time.

Finally I must thank all the coaches for their time and the players who have attended Committee meetings. My thanks in particular to Raylene who has had the unenviable task of collecting the subs, managing Thursday night and listening to all my concerns in addition to being the club treasurer.
