The Spike Newsletter - Exerpts from Special General Meeting/Prizegiving held 17th September 2004:
Speech from Paul Hoffman (Women's A Coach):
Thanking those who have been working behind scenes to make it all happen. A huge
job right back to last summer when beach started and thought out the season.
From organizing pub charities, to Gym bookings, to collecting fees and entering the
tournaments and local competitions. Well Done we do appreciate it.
Reflection: A very Promising season but I suppose every season has its hiccups.
This for us was never getting our full strength team to any of the Southern League
Tournaments. This was a telling factor when we had the poor start at nationals.
The full squad this year was 15 players: Madaline from Sweden, Missy who went to
Switzerland, and Shaza from France who played a big part of the season only to miss
out on attending Nationals. Shaza was really great, she even did her part in fundraising
and had was happy to give the money to the team for Nationals, I think she just loved
the nights out in town and the fund raising was a good excuse. Then Abby from Shirley
joined us for Nationals and added plenty to the team, especially with her excellent
passing. Krystle who inconsiderately went and broke her thumb early in the
season which slowed her down and consequently missed much of the season but a
great positive team person. Then there is Mikja from Brazil, Lesa from AshVegas, and
Sally who wouldn’t introduce the boyfriend to us and told him to sit in the stands.
Hana the, “might be at practice”, unorthadox setter but effective most of the time,
the excitable Tomomi from Japan, and then those big girls Sal, Enna, Flo, Sarona,
and Litia -the power hitters and blockers. This team certainly have the ability
to go all the way to winning a national title and if all of the girls can stick at
it I’m sure that time of success is not far away. Well done to these girls who have
been and continue to be the keys to our success. A big thank you to Lesa who never
missed a practice or game, travelling from Ashburton, she also provided a great catalyst
for better and more intense practices this year so well done Lesa. Well done Sarona
as most improved player and also to Sal and Flo as our joint players of the year.
2005 is going to be the year, all that is needed is a full commitment to attending
all tournaments and practices and the prospect of winning nationals could become a reality.
Some great moments throughout the year, giving NZIS 3-4 good hidings on Monday nights,
beating Trojans 3-2 at Nationals and the excellent finish when we played so well in
beating Vikings in the final game at Nationals. The downer is that we were only one game
away from making semi-finals and could have won both NZIS games.
I was going to read some extracts from the fines book to finish, but the neck marks
from the social weren’t mentioned in the book but I suppose they speak for themselves
and I can’t find the book anyway. The trouble Sal got into in Dunedin was mentioned
though when she had to use the toilet bowl to support herself at the oriental. More
control of the drinking habit needed there, but the social aspects and friendship
among the team is certainly a strength that has developed and should continue to be fostered.
Well done all and I look forward to 2005. Again thanks to the Team and Club.

Poem From 2004 Nationals - by Sally's Mum
One cold snowy August day
Hoff and his heirum flew away
Volleyball Nationals in Tauranga to win
Jaw teams from all over come on down
The Hornby girls did themselves proud
With the help of Mika cheering loud
Abby the import played her heart out
Tomomi took photos - of that there’s no doubt
Hana and Sally shared setting the ball
Litia kept smiling through good, bad & all
Enna led the team well, only once leaving one behind
Sal must have had other things on her mind
Krystle was caught reading on the sideline
I suppose Sal was dreaming bout number 9
Flo was totally stunning in her bitch ass shoes
As she headed out to collect a few bruises
Lisa Libero once had too much beer, but
She didn’t complain she knew I would not hear
Remember Sarona, if you have too much Tuna
you might get fata, you need a phone to record all the data
Now the games are all over its time to go home
So we loaded the vans and began to roam
To Paeroa we got where we had a break down
Brother Hoff made two trips to Auckland town
Once all at the airport the plane was delayed
So out came the games which we all played
O no our airplane was delayed again
So we laughed and we waited oh what a pain
Finally everything fell into place
We boarded the plane at a leisurely pace
Though we were all tired
We had a good flight and made it to CHCH
Well after midnight
That was the end of the volleyball trip
Thank you so much for including me
Mama Sue in it!
