Winter Volleyball Competition Rules 2007
ENTRY FEE
The entrance fee is $3.00 per player.
REGISTRATION FEE
All individuals must be registered with Volleyball New Zealand to participate in the competition. Registration for recreational volleyball
is required on a per competition basis. CVA will register players based on the player lists provided at the start of each competition.
It is expected that team squads will remain approximately the same for the duration of the competition.
GENERAL
Recreational volleyball competitions are run for the Canterbury Volleyball Association Incorporated by its agents. They are social
competitions with an emphasis on fun. The organisers expect that games will be played with a positive and friendly attitude.
COMPETITION STRUCTURE
Where possible, teams are placed in sections of six. At the beginning of the competition, organisers assign teams to grades of similar level,
based on previous results with the expectation that, after two rounds players will be playing against teams of similar ability. Each section
plays during the same time slot, and five matches against the other teams over a five week period constitutes a completed round. At the end
of each round, teams will be promoted and relegated according to their placing in their section. In most cases, the top two placed teams move
up a section and the bottom two teams move down. Movement of teams between sections will be at the organiser’s discretion.
The competition will be played under FIVB rules with amendments to fit the recreational nature of this competition:
A match is played as the best of five sets, but play will continue for the whole time period, even if the result is decided before time.
All sets are won by the first team to score 25 points with a minimum lead of 2 points.
Set scores are uncapped.
The match is completed by the sounding of a hooter or whistle by the organisers at the completion of the allocated time slot. The rally
in play will be completed and the point awarded. The set in progress will count toward the match result if at least 15 points have been scored
by one team, with a minimum lead of 2 points.
Key volleyball rules to note are:
The ball contacting the roof, wall or part thereof is deemed out of play
The ball may be hit by any part of body,
A simultaneous double-hit is permitted on the first touch only,
Lifting or carrying the ball with open hand contact is not permitted
If on the serve, the ball touches the net and continues over the net then the rally will continue. If the ball hits the net and does not
go over or lands outside the court it is a fault.
Matches will be played under the rally point system. Each rally wins a point whether it is for the serving or for the receiving team.
Contact with the net is not allowed when playing the ball e.g. blocking and spiking. Players may not penetrate completely under the net
with their feet or hands. These rules are for player safety.
REFEREES
Teams will self referee their games. At the side of each court will be a score indicator and a clipboard with a score sheet attached.
A substitute player or the closest person should maintain the score. Team captains will fill in and sign the score sheet and hand it to
the door person at the conclusion of the match. Should the result of a rally (for example whether the ball was in or out, or who hit the net) be undecided or unclear, the rally shall be
declared a tie-ball and the point played again. Please remember this is a social competition and honesty is expected.
DEFAULTS
A team must be able to field four players registered to that team within 10 minutes of the start of the match. Any number less than that
will result in a default. By agreement a friendly game can then be played. Should a team have less than four players, by agreement, fill in
players can be used to make up numbers to the required level. If the match is declared a default, the winning team will be awarded the maximum
five points for the match. The result of "Default" must be recorded on the score sheet with the name of the winning team noted.
FILL-IN PLAYERS
In the event of a shortage of regular players, by agreement with the opposition, a team may use two fill-in players. The opposing team must
be asked before the match if the fill-in players can be used, especially if the game is not declared as a default.
Team member names do not have to be recorded for each game. It is expected that for any finals night of each competition, only players
registered with the team will be permitted to play for that team - "no fill-ins".
SUBSTITUTES
A team can have any number of substitutes and can substitute at any time when the ball is not in play.
COMPETITION POINTS
Points will be awarded as follows:
2 points for a win
1 for a draw
1 bonus point for each set won to a maximum of 3 bonus points for a match.
In the event of two teams being tied for points at the end of a round, then the winner of the match in that round between the teams in
question will be declared the higher placed team. Should that match be drawn, the winner of the first set in that game will be declared
the higher placed team.
Should more than two teams be tied on points at the end of a round, they will be ranked on the points differential of the first set.
Should that be equal, the points differential of subsequent sets will be used until a separation can be made.
The organisers reserve the right to warn and if necessary, deduct points for rule breaches.
RESULTS
Results will be displayed on the web each week, as soon as practicable after matches have been played.
